Opinions relating to claims against life insurance companies, 1925-1933.

Contains transcriptions, in English, of memoranda and court opinions of claims brought before various courts in United States, Great Britain, Germany, France, and Austria, against the New York Life Insurance Company and the Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States. These companies provided coverage to alien residents and citizens of Russia before the revolution of 1917. In 1919 the Soviet government annulled all previously existing life insurance contracts. Subsequently these two companies exercised a waiver in their contracts which allowed them to terminate their obligation for coverage to policy holders. Includes an index to opinions.

The Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States (ELAS) was founded in 1859 by Henry Baldwin Hyde (1834-1899). Hyde sought to guarantee that his son, James Hazen Hyde (1876-1959), would continue family control of the company after his death, but in 1905 the younger Hyde lost control in a struggle which resulted from an investigation of the insurance industry by New York State.
